Mine Closures are regulated according to Peruvian Act Nº 28090. The main purpose of a Mine Closure is to prevent, minimize and control risks and impacts on health, individuals’ safety, the ecosystem and property, that may originate from the interruption of a determined mining unit's operations.
After 10 years of gold production, in 2011 the Quicay Mine concludes its operational lifespan. Since then, Corporación Minera Centauro has been duly executing the activities regarding the Progressive Mine Closure stage. However, due to the ongoing exploration works in the Quicay Pit area (also known as Quicay I project) the Mine Closure schedule had to be postponed: the scheduled dates for completion of the Progressive and Final Mine Closure have been modified.
Before the latest Mine Closure postponement, and complying with the dumps remediation, 121 hectares of mining components have been entirely revegetated. Furthermore and fulfilling Corporación Minera Centauro's environmental commitment, innovative initiatives such as maca and native potato production in dumps, have been succesfully achieved.
